REQUIREMENTS:

1.  One party must be Catholic.

2.  If either party is divorced he/she must have an annulment before being married again in the Catholic Church.  The Catholic Church recognizes marriages from other faiths and thus if you are not Catholic and are divorced you may have to seek an annulment before being allowed to marry in the Catholic Church.  Be advised this process may take 9 months.

3.  Pre-Cana is required of both parties.  Dates will be provided by Sharon Secor.

4.   Six months advance notice.

5.  Each spouse, if Catholic,  must provide their baptismal certificate. These certificates should be included with the deposit.

6.  Canonical paperwork must be filled out with Msgr. Neal E. Quartier.

7.  The Sacrament of Confirmation is not a requirement but if you have not been confirmed you may be able to receive this Sacrament during the Easter season before your marriage.

Initial Contact:

Parish Secretary, Ann Kerwin to inquire as to whether desired date is available - 422-4177.

Follow-up:

Sharon Secor (Coordinator of Wedding Arrangements) will be in touch with you to make further arrangements.  Please go to the    SELECTION FORM   page on this site and follow the directions for your selections.

Celebrant:

Msgr. Neal E. Quartier will officiate at the wedding.  You may invite another priest to officiate.  Please have him call Msgr. Quartier to discuss arrangements.

Appointments with Msgr. Quartier:

After we have received your deposit and baptismal records, Sharon Secor will arrange a time for you to meet with Msgr. Quartier.  At this first appointment, you will fill out the canonical forms and make initial plans.  One month before your wedding you will meet once again to finalize plans.

Outside Priest:

Any priest in good standing with his diocese is welcome to celebrate a wedding at the Cathedral.   The bride and groom will be responsible for any stipend to the visiting priest.

Mixed Religion;

If you are marrying a non-Catholic we encourage a wedding ceremony without a Mass so as not to make it uncomfortable for the non-Catholic members of the congregation.  The wedding ceremony without the Mass is very similar to the Nuptial Mass with the exception of the Eucharistic prayer and the distribution of communion.

Planning the Ceremony:

When you meet with Msgr. Quartier he will refer you to a link on this site from which you may choose all the prayers and readings for your wedding service.  There is a form to be filled out and forwarded to Msgr. Quartier or Sharon Secor.   Ms. Alibrandi will hold monthly sessions regarding your wedding day events.  Monthly emails will be sent to each couple informing them of the dates for those meetings which are held at 11:30 am on a Sunday morning.

Candle Lighting Ceremony:

Many couples include this ceremony at their wedding.  The mothers (or whoever the bride and groom choose) light individual candles and after the exchange of rings the newly married couple light the wedding candle. The set of  three candles is provided by the couple.  ( A holder for candles should also be included to ensure correct size)

Letter Writing:
Msgr. Quartier will invite the couple  to write a letter to their spouse about their hopes and dreams for the marriage. This is strictly voluntary but adds a nice touch to the ceremony.  He uses these letters in the homily.  The couples usually do not share their letters with each other.  The letters are usually one page double spaced.

Marriage License:

Please make sure that you obtain a Marriage License at least 48 hours before the ceremony. It must be brought with you at the time of the rehearsal.  The Maid of Honor and the Best Man will sign it at the rehearsal as your witnesses.  Some couples have more than two witnesses.  You must be prepared to have only two witnesses sign the license.

Wedding Ceremony Sacristan:

Mary Emily Alibrandi coordinates the actual wedding and will assist the bridal party the day of the wedding.  If you have hired a wedding coordinator, please be advised that only our Wedding/Ceremony Sacristan will be assisting you at the Church. She will be in touch with you prior to your wedding. Mary Emily's email is maryemily48@yahoo.com.

Music:

Tim Davenport is the Director of Music at the Cathedral and must be contacted regarding all music. Please contact him at least one month prior to your wedding.  He plays the organ as well as the keyboard.  He will help you choose music and hire soloists, cantors, musicians.  Please be aware that the selection of appropriate music is preferred for the religious portion of the marriage ceremony.  Tim can be reached at 422-4177 EXT 31 or by email-
weddings@syrcathmusic.org

Wedding Showcase:

Once a year in October or March, we host an afternoon where different soloists and musicians present their music to the bride and groom.  This offers you an opportunity to listen to the different vocalists, harpists, violin players, string quartets, etc.  From this you can make choices for your wedding ceremony.  They will bill you separately.  At that time we usually offer one hour of Pre-Cana to satisfy your obligation.  Sharon Secor will inform you of these dates and times.  This is an opportunity to meet Msgr. Quartier, Tim Davenport and Mary Emily Alibrandi.

Rehearsal:

The rehearsal is usually the evening before the ceremony.  Msgr. Quartier will book your rehearsal time at your initial meeting with him.  Mary Emily will conduct your wedding rehearsal.    It is of utmost importance that you and your wedding party be on time for the rehearsal. (There could be more than one rehearsal scheduled on a Thursday or Friday evening.)   If you are late, yoru rehearsal may be cut very short.

Flowers:

You are welcome to order flowers for the altar.  It is requested that at least one bouquet be left at the church as a gift  for the many blessings God has bestowed on you this day.

Wedding Day:
Groomsmen, please be at the Church 45 minutes before the start of the ceremony.  Bride and bridesmaids, please be at the Church 15 minutes before the ceremony.  Since there is much activity at the Cathedral we must insist that you be on time.

Runner for middle aisle:(optional)

The aisle is 125 feet long.  There are 21 pews on each side of the aisle.

Receiving Line:

If you wish to have a receiving line at the end of the ceremony the Cathedral has a beautiful Prayer Park where many bridal parties receive their guests.  As you leave the Church proceed to the right and enter the Park.  It is circular and your guests can greet you around the circle and easily exit for their cars.

Pictures:

The taking of pictures and videoing the ceremony is certainly welcome. Please ask your technology people not to be intrusive.

Fees:

$900 with a $450 Deposit which secures the day and time of the wedding. The fee covers the Church, Celebrant (if you use Cathedral personnel), Music Organist,  Rehearsal  and Procession Coordinators,  Maintenance and Security, the Pre-Cana class and Music Showcase.  These personnel are paid by the Church and do not require any further gifts or compensation.  The balance after the deposit is requested no later than two weeks before the ceremony.  Checks should be made out to "The Cathedral."
